a little sports here, news from the nfl that will ratchet up the controversy for mike shanahan's decision to let robert given iii play hurt last weekend. a source says rg3 will have reconstructive surgery this morning to repair tears in his lcl and possibly his acl. he is expected to be ready for the 2013 regular season opener. yesterday dr. james andrews who was on the sideline during the game, tried to shed light on the decision to keep rg3 in the game. speaking to the "washington post," he explained coach shanahan looks at me and is, like, is he okay? i give him the high sign as in he's running around, so i guess he's okay. but i didn't check him out until after the game. it was just a communication problem. heat of battle. i didn't get to tell him that i didn't get to examine the knee. mike shanahan would have never put him out there at risk just to win a game. earlier in the week, andrews contradicted shanahan saying he had been examined. more from the nfl, rex ryan's twin brother, rob ryan, he's been fired as defensive coordinator of the cowboys. in keeping with the family tradition

'm in the minority but i believe that in the nfl if a player and the coach get together and decide, you know, what we're going to do here regarding injury and keep him in the game, keep him in the game. >> he's a 22-year-old rookie. the coach has 30, 40 years experience coaching. up to the coach to say, hey, i don't think that you can play this game and putting in kurt cousins and maybe we'll win. >> this isn't the high school regionals. this is the nfl playoffs. they know their bodies. 90% of the players on that field for both are injured at this point. you play through injury. i don't have a problem with him gutting it out. he came in hurt already and they felt that he was a better option than the backup quarterback to try to win the game. did it play out that way? it didn't and ended like this. there are a lot of factors involved not the least of which is that turf coming loose under his feet. you think they have enough money to fix it. >> we don't know the extent. he'll have an mri on monday but i think it's an absolute gis grace that a nfl playoff game on a field that looks like that. dirt that'

football took a new turn today. a brain analysis found former n.f.l. great junior seau was suffering from c.t.e. a degenerative brain disease, when he committed suicide last may. the national institutes of health said there were abnormalities widely linked to repetitive blows to the head. seau had been a star linebacker for 20 years before retiring in 2009. in economic news, american express announced it's cutting about 5,400 jobs as it restructures. the reductions will come mainly in the company's travel business. and on wall street, stocks had a good day, after reports suggesting the economic outlooks in china and europe may be improving. the dow jones industrial average gained more than 80 points to close at 13,471. the nasdaq rose nearly 16 points to close above 3,121. the standard and poor's 500 hit another five-year high, topping 1,470. those are some of the day's major stories. now, back to judy. >> woodruff: a series of bombings across pakistan killed over 100 people today and injured scores more. a short while ago, ray suarez talked by phone to "new york times" reporter declan wals

in general. >> it is a toxic franchise. if you rated the different franchises in the nfl that have a high level of toxicity, redskins are probably in the top five. of that group. and my colleague thomas boswell wrote a column about this. he wasn't necessarily blaming directly the redskins but his point is when you go for the quick fix at all times, it is impossible to see the long-term view. that was the case that happened in that game. even beyond what was the injury, it wasn't the smart move to win that specific game. the short-term move, in my opinion, was the wrong move and in the long-term it didn't work out either. >> suched a good point. if you look at the franchise at least under the leadership of the danny dan schneider it has been quick fix after quick fix. let's get bruce smith to deion sanders. throwing people in and putting people at risk like they did with rgiii. they haven't taken the time to look ahead, build a good, solid franchise team and it really might have bit them in the last game. >> yeah. this is the one time that they did take the time to look ahead in terms of w
